AL-SAHA: “Improving health services and psychosocial support for children in Libya” project funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) – Tunis We are thrilled to share the successful completion of the PEAK (Paediatric Emergencies and Advanced Knowledge) Training Program, held from April 28 to May 2. This intensive five-day program, conducted in partnership with Meyer Hospital – Florence and Careggi University Hospital – Florence, aimed to strengthen the capacity of Libyan healthcare professionals in managing paediatric and neonatal emergencies through high-fidelity simulation exercises and evidence-based clinical training.

Training Structure The program was meticulously designed to blend theoretical knowledge with realistic, hands-on practice.
Days 1–4 Focused on Paediatric Emergency Care, covering: 🔹 Monitoring and assessment of critical conditions 🔹 ABCD approach for systematic evaluation 🔹 Basic Life Support (BLS) and Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) 🔹 Airway management and ventilation techniques 🔹 Inotropic support and teamwork in critical situations
Day 5 Dedicated to Neonatal Emergency Care, with emphasis on: 🔹 Management of critically ill new-borns 🔹 Neonatal Life Support (NLS)

Learning Methodology Theoretical lessons were consistently paired with practical simulation exercises, ensuring an integrated and hands-on learning experience. As part of the training, a full day of high-fidelity simulations was conducted at the Honoris Medical Simulation Center of the University of Tunis, which provided access to four fully equipped scenario/operating rooms. These simulations allowed participants to immerse themselves in realistic emergency situations, strengthening both clinical decision-making and team coordination under pressure.
Our Trainers The training was led by a distinguished team of healthcare experts:
- A Paediatrician and PALS & Simulation Instructor from Meyer Hospital – Florence
- An Anaesthesiologist and ALS Instructor from the ICU, Careggi University Hospital – Florence
- Francesco Severi, a Paediatric Nurse and Simulation Instructor from Meyer Hospital – Florence
- A Paediatrician and Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Registrar from the ICU, Cattinara Hospital – Trieste

Strengthening Local Healthcare Systems The PEAK Training Program represents a significant step forward in enhancing emergency care services in Libyan healthcare facilities. Through advanced training and simulation-based practice, local medical teams are now better prepared to respond effectively to paediatric and neonatal emergencies, ultimately contributing to safer healthcare environments and improved patient outcomes.

We are proud of the commitment shown by all participants and grateful to our partners for their expertise and dedication. Together, we are building stronger, more resilient healthcare systems where they are needed most.
