A dispensary in the community of Chimaltenango
Overview:
To improve the living standard of the local population of the Department of Chimaltenango in the plateau of Guatemala. The purpose of the project is to improve the hygienic-sanitary conditions of 30 rural communities in the municipalities of Tecpan, Santa Apolonia, San Jose Poaquil, Comalapa and Patzicia (5 out of 15 municipalities of the Department of Chimaltenango), through the introduction of a basic healthcare service system. The specific aim of the project is not only to offer healthcare assistance to the local population, but also to raise awareness on basic health issues and to build the capacity so that medical assistance and adequate hygienic conditions are available even after the project is concluded.
Results:
– implemented training courses for 120 healthcare promoters, community leaders and teachers to make them able to promote healthcare education in their own communities;
– established 30 dispensaries managed by healthcare promoters where people can find basic medicines and medical assistance;
– organized about 4,000 medical examinations;
– organisation of training courses for about 9,000 children and their teachers on basic hygienic and sanitary issues.
